Weight lifting straps are commonly used to enable a body builder to lift a larger weight than they would normally be able to achieve.
The benefit in this is that the user is not limited by the strength of their grip or hands. Quite often for heavy weights it will be the hands that give out and not the muscles, thus rendering the exercise less effective. The weight lifting straps are particularly advantageous for muscle building exercises like the deadlift and shrugs.
The downside is that the straps put extra pressure on your bones and have been known to decrease the grip strength which in turn means the weight lifting straps are needed more. The other disadvantage is that other muscles such as the forearms are used less with the straps and therefore lose the benefit that lifting without the straps would provide.
